SPORTS NETWORKING and BUILDING BRIDGES:: BHUTAN-JAPAN-NETHERLANDS:: – INSPIRING COMMUNICATIONS 54: From February 7 to 20, TIAS 2.0 4th batch student

TIAS 2.0 4th batch student Mai van der Scheer participated as a short-term volunteer in Bhutan under the All Japan Judo Federation (AJJF) “Judo for Tomorrow” program. Alongside two other volunteers, she organized an intensive training camp to support Bhutan’s preparation for the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain later this year. Beyond contributing to the development of Bhutanese judo and coaching, she actively engaged in cultural exchange between Japan, Bhutan, and the Netherlands.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the All Japan Judo Federation, the Bhutan Judo Association, and JICA. A special thanks to Karma-san, Katayama-san, Fukui-sensei, and assistant coaches Purna-sensei and Bikashu-sensei for their support on-site. This experience was truly invaluable and one that I will treasure for life.”

She reflected on the dedication of the Bhutan Judo Association (BJA) in developing the sport:
“It was a privilege to witness firsthand the efforts of the Bhutan Judo Association over the years. Their commitment is evident, and I sincerely hope their vision will allow Bhutanese judo to flourish. Beyond competition, I believe judo has the potential to gain wider recognition in Bhutan—not just as a sport, but as an educational tool and a means of international exchange. By instilling discipline, respect, and perseverance, judo can support the personal growth of young people while fostering cross-cultural connections.”
